CM trying to hush up foodgrain scam: Capt

Tribune News Service
Chandigarh, June 24
Punjab Congress chief Capt Amarinder Singh today said Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal was trying to hush up the matter of “misappropriation” of Rs 12,000 crore meant for foodgrain procurement.
In a statement issued here today, Amarinder alleged that during his (Badal’s) previous tenure between 1997 and 2002, he had a misappropriated Rs 4,700 crore in a similar manner.
The former CM said when he took over in 2002, his government inherited a CCL deficit of Rs 4,700 crore from the Akali government.
He said he had to give personal guarantee to then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee that he would ensure that the deficit was cleared before further CCL was released. “And when we demitted the office in 2007, there was no deficit,” he claimed.
Amarinder also said Badal had no moral authority to blame the Congress for the SYL row as it was he (Badal) who had accepted Rs 2 crore from his Haryana counterpart Devi Lal in 1978 for the construction of the canal by giving precedence to personal relations over Punjab’s interests.

Jalandhar, June 23
An NRI couple from the United Kingdom today accused the Shankar police post in-charge of supporting persons who allegedly wanted to occupy their farming land at Dhariwal village.
Addressing mediapersons here today, Surjit Singh (60), who is physically challenged, and his wife Manjit Kaur (62) said they bought 17 kanals and 18 marlas at Dhariwal.
Talwinder Singh and Manjinder Singh want to illegally occupy their land, the couple alleged.
Complaints were sent to the NRI police station, SSP, DIG and other officials from England via e-mail, but to no avail, the couple added.
“Under political pressure, the police have failed to take any action against the accused. Instead, a false case has been registered against me,” alleged Surjit Singh. The couple said they managed to get a stay from a civil court at Nakodar on June 21 when they were stopped from irrigating their land by Talwinder Singh and Manjinder Singh.
Surjit Singh, who has already suffered three heart attacks, said the police had been threatening them of registering a false case against their relative, who had been helping the couple.
“The police are pressurising us to reach a compromise with the other party. False FIR was registered against me on June 15 when I was still in England,” he alleged. When contacted, Shankar police post in-charge Loveleen Singh denied all the allegations.
He said the NRI couple bought the land from another NRI and got possession of 2 kanals more than what they bought. The seller, meanwhile, has given the power of attorney to Talwinder Singh, who wants the 2 kanals, which is the root cause of the dispute, he added. He said the case that was registered against Surjit Singh was not false.
