Swear before Takht on SYL: Capt to CM

Tribune News Service
Chandigarh, July 30
Punjab Congress president Capt Amarinder Singh today challenged Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to swear before the Akal Takht that his government had not ordered the acquisition of land for the construction of the SYL canal in 1978.
In a press release, Capt dared Badal to deny the then Haryana CM Devi Lal’s statement in the Vidhan Sabha about his friendship (with Badal) and its influence on facilitating the SYL construction.
On Badal’s statement that he (Capt) was spreading disinformation about the issue, Amarinder reiterated that it was the former who had issued a notification on land acquisition for the canal.
“Badal wants to wriggle out of his failures and now he will make the SC order against Punjab an excuse to resign. I am sure that was the reason why his government weakened the state’s case,” he added.

‘Kejri, Majithia acted like street bullies’

  • Capt accused Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majithia of behaving like street bullies by threatening each other in Amritsar on Friday with ‘post-dated arrest warrants’ and bringing down the political discourse to such a low level.

Amritsar, July 30

The management of Brahmbutta Akhara, situated next to the Golden Temple, today thwarted an alleged attempt by the SGPC to raise a structure at an open space near the akhara’s gate.
The latter abandoned the construction and the matter was kept pending since SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar was not well and chief secretary Harcharan Singh was out of town.
Earlier in the day, ‘akhara’ officials stopped labourers from raising a structure at the spot. A heap of bricks is still lying there. Golden Temple manager Sulakhan Singh and manager of Sri Guru Ramdas Langar hall visited the spot and held talks with the ‘akhara’ officials.
The ‘akhara’, a centre of Udasin sect, is associated with Baba Sri Chand. Baba Joginder Singh of the akhara said the land was given to them in 2015 following the intervention of the district administration.
When contacted, SGPC chief secretary said it was a minor issue and would be sorted out amicably. He said the land belonged to the SGPC and they wanted to construct an enclosure to store fuel.

Police shielding Pathankot attack suspects: Channi

Ravi Dhaliwal
Tribune News Service
Pathankot, July 30

CLP Leader Charanjit Channi today claimed that senior police officers were shielding prominent people in the Pathankot terror attack.
Police officers were deliberately going slow as the suspects were influential. The cops had concrete evidence of their involvement but were shying away fearing a political backlash from their political masters, he alleged. Channi was in the city to address the PPCC Jan Sampark rally.
He claimed that the US had given a document to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which is probing the terror attack proving Pakistan’s hand in the attack.
“Four militants were pushed into India by their handlers more than a day before the first shot was fired. They remained in Pathankot city for nearly 30 hours before entering the air force station. What was the police doing all this time? SP Salwinder Singh had informed his seniors on December 31 that he had been kidnapped by a group of four terrorists. Still the cops did nothing, he pointed out.
The SP’s car was found near the air force base a day before the ultras launched their attack. Still the police failed to trace the whereabouts of the militants despite the fact that the top brass of the police had arrived in the city. Why did the cops not take the SP’s claims seriously?” asked Channi.
On AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal, Channi said his claims of arresting Majithia if his party came to power were mere rhetoric. “Before the Delhi elections, Kejriwal had made a claim that he would arrest Shiela Dikshit within a month of coming to power. However, nothing happened,” he said.

Kejri gets bail; AAP, SAD avert clash

Relief for Sanjay Singh as well, Khetan fails to appear; Majithia supporters block court entrance; next hearing on Oct 15

From page 01 AMRITSAR: It took Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal just 15 minutes to get bail in the defamation case filed by Punjab revenue minister Bikram Singh Majithia but the city was prisoner to their invading supporters for hours on Friday.
Commandeered by senior leaders and a couple of ministers, the Akali crowd packed the main entrance to the court so tightly that even Majithia struggled to get in and Kejriwal had to be ushered through the backdoor. Police couldn’t hold the rampaging Akalis even a few metres, when they had no trouble holding the AAP workers a kilometre from the judicial complex, at Circuit House, where Kejriwal had made the night halt.
Both Akalis and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) workers occupied streets outside the court complex. As soon as Kejriwal secured bail, slogans rang out there against Majithia and drug menace. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) camp, pitched there since 8.30am, responded with slogans accusing Kejriwal of defaming PunjabisIt was a placard war. “Punjab di Jawani nu badnam karoge taan rokange, bani da niradar karoge te thokange (If you defame Punjab’s youth, we’ll stop you, if you disrespect Sikh scripture, we’ll batter you),” threatened Akali signs. The AAP banners played up Kejriwal’s statement: “Mein ik vaar nahi hazaar vaar kahanga, Majithia chitte da taskar hai (I’ll say it not once but a thousand times, Majithia is a drug smuggler).”
Police let the crowd build up outside the court, not expecting it to get so big. With an AkaliAAP clash first thing to avoid, police commissioner Amar Singh Chahal led Kejriwal into the court under his protection. After 15 minutes, the AAP leader came out and was whisked away amid tight security. “The court has granted bail to Kejriwal and (party colleague) Sanjay Singh and set the next hearing for October 15,” said senior lawyer and AAP leader HS Phoolka. “(Co-accused) Ashish Khetan did not appear today but he will be here at next hearing.”
Majithia has sued the three AAP leaders for accusing him of running Punjab’s drug trade. State elections are due next year, and the AAP is a major challenger to the ruling AkaliBJP combine.

Cong should name CM face: Amarinder

CHANDIGARH: Punjab Congress president Capt Amarinder Singh has asked his party highcommand to declare the chief ministerial candidate before the 2017 state elections for tactical advantage.
Terming Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convener Arvind Kejriwal an outsider to Punjab and its current ruling combine unlikely to win again, Amarinder told the media on Friday here that the Congress needed to use this edge in the polls. Giving example of Uttar Pradesh (another state heading for early-2017 polls), where Sheila Dikshit is party’s CM candidate, he said even regional parties had announced their CM faces. “It is not mandatory in our party,” said Amarinder, “but has become necessary to let people know whom they are voting.”Ruling out possibility of the AAP’s winning Punjab, Amarinder said the state had enough able leaders within.

Arrest me or I will arrest you, dares Kejri; Majithia unfazed

SAD Minister: Matter of ‘aaj bail kal jail’ for AAP CM, aides
GS Paul
Tribune News Service
Amritsar, July 29

Aam Aadmi Party convener and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal today dared Punjab Revenue Minister Bikram Majithia to arrest him within six months (during the SAD-BJP’s remaining tenure) or else he would have him (Majithia) arrested after that.
“It's a matter of ‘aaj bail kal jail’ for this arrogant leader (Kejriwal). He cannot escape the law,” the Minister hit back. “I am glad the Delhi CM has been dragged to court for maligning my name,” he said amid cheering by supporters.
Thronged by a huge crowd, Kejriwal and his party colleague Sanjay Singh appeared in a local court and procured bail on a bond of Rs 40,000 each. The defamation case will now come up for hearing on October 15, said AAP leader and Supreme Court lawyer HS Phoolka. He said Ashish Khetan had already been exempted from personal appearance.
It turned out to be a parallel show of strength between the Revenue Minister and the AAP convener. Policemen in large numbers were deployed en route the district courts. Police Commissioner Amar Singh Chahal himself supervised the security arrangements.
About 15,000 - 20,000 AAP volunteers had gathered near the Circuit House by the time Kejriwal, who was accompanied by Bhagwant Mann, Sangrur MP, and Punjab convener Sucha Singh Chhotepur, arrived there.
The police reportedly stopped AAP volunteers barely a kilometre from the court even as Akali Dal workers gathered there in large numbers.
The AAP volunteers were seen carrying placards, which read: “Main ek var nahin hazaar var kahanga, Bikram Majithia chitte da taskar hai (I will say not once, but a thousand times that Majithia smuggles drugs).”
Solely focusing on the drug menace, Kejriwal claimed that hoardings across Punjab describing Majithia as a “druglord” clearly indicated the people had made up their mind to oust the Akalis. “Not just me, Ashish Khetan and Sanjay Singh, but lakhs of Punjabis call Majithia a drug trafficker. I ask Majithia, how many defamation cases will he file?” he thundered.
He said that when the Badal government could pressurise him, Delhi Chief Minister, by implicating him in a false case, he could well understand the harassment faced by the common man (aam aadmi) in Punjab.

Judging defamation

Democratic dissent needs to be protectedTHE Supreme Court of India finds itself having to confront the consequences of its own ruling on defamation. In May earlier this year the apex court had upheld the existing defamation law as a necessary instrument to protect an individual’s reputation against scurrilous attacks. “Reputation of one cannot be allowed to be crucified at the altar of the other's right to free speech,” the court had formulated. Reputation of a person was deemed to be central to the right to life, guaranteed under Article 21 in the Constitution. It was a balancing act, delicately performed.
The ideal and desirable balance, however, is never easily arrived at. This week the court found itself having to take cognizance of the misuse of the defamation law in Tamil Nadu, where an opposition leader, Vijayakanth, had got slapped with a notice and served with a non-bailable warrant for daring to criticise the Jayalalithaa government. The court was constrained to declare that the “defamation law cannot be used as a political weapon.”
But that precisely has been happening. On Friday the Chief Minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal, was in Amritsar having to put in an appearance in a court, seeking bail in a case brought against him by a Punjab Cabinet minister, Bikram Singh Majithia. The Delhi Chief Minister is not without legal and financial resources to defend himself; but other democratic groups and individuals may not be all that well endowed. Sections 499 and 500 of the Indian Penal Code, as they stand, bestow an unfair advantage on the rich and the powerful who can threaten to shut down inconvenient criticism through the mechanism of ruinous litigation. In Punjab and Haryana political leaders regularly resort to sending ‘legal notices’ to newspapers. The defamation law has become an instrument of intimidation and coercion. While big news organisations do have the financial resources to defend themselves against such tactics, the voice of the district and local level newspapers often gets throttled. The democratic expectation can only be that while disposing of the Jayalalithaa-Vijayakanth matter, the apex court will restore the balance in favour of democratic dissent and criticism.

Why ad hoc GOC-in-C posting: Amarinder

Capt Amarinder Singh
Chandigarh, July 29
Punjab Congress chief Capt Amarinder Singh on Friday said there cannot be a “worst example of indecisiveness” of the Modi government than the appointment of an ad hoc Commander to the crucial Western Command of the Army.
Reacting to the reports about the Army having appointed an “officiating” General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Command, Amarinder said it was unprecedented and probably for the first time in history.
“It only reflects the lack of decision making at the highest level”, he said, while wondering as why was not a regular appointment made when everybody knew that the incumbent Commander was going to retire on July 31.
This, he said, was because of the excessive and over centralisation of all the powers in the PMO.
The former Chief Minister, who has authored several military history books, maintained that the Army appointments are based on the seniority, unless somebody’s record is really too bad. So there should not have been any delay or difficulty in choosing a new Commander.
“It only betrays, either lack of confidence or utmost indecisiveness in the government”, Amarinder said, while wondering what the Defence Minister (Manohar Parrikar) was doing. — PTI

363 farmer suicides this year, 56 in Punjab: Centre

New Delhi, July 29
About 363 farmers across the country have committed suicide so far this year due to agrarian reasons, including 56 in Punjab, Parliament was informed today.
According to the data placed by Minister of State for Agriculture Parshottam Rupala in the Rajya Sabha, a maximum of 241 farmer suicides were reported from Karnataka, followed by Maharashtra (57).
The minister said this data had been furnished by the states, not by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). The latter has published such data only till 2014.
In 2015, the number of such cases was 107 in Karnataka, 1,841 in Maharashtra and 46 in Punjab, while the figure for the country was 2,548.
Replying to a query on the steps taken by the Centre to rehabilitate families of the farmers who committed suicide, the minister said, “The government’s strategy is to focus on the farmers’ welfare by making farming viable.” — PTI

Cong should name CM face before poll: Capt

Rajmeet Singh
Tribune News Service
Chandigarh, July 29

The party should declare the CM candidate well before the Assembly polls, PPCC chief Capt Amarinder Singh said here today.
In a freewheeling interaction with the media, he said he was hopeful that the announcement will be made as had been done in the case of Uttar Pradesh.
The former CM reasoned that it was important to clear the air on the CM -designate as the people were keen to know their candidate and would vote accordingly.
The MP from Amritsar said the SAD-BJP alliance had already done so and the AAP is expected to follow in the coming days. This should be done to counter regional parties, he reasoned.
On Kejriwal as the AAP CM candidate, he said the issue of the ‘son of the soil’ will crop as there was no dearth of Chief Ministerial candidates in Punjab. “Kejriwal has other minus points like hailing from Haryana. All Punjab disputes are with Haryana and where will he (Kejriwal) stand. His stance on SYL is an example”, he added.
On distribution of tickets, he admitted that in 2012 elections out of 39 tickets and seven for youth candidates that were allotted on recommendation of senior leaders, the party won only six seats.
“Even if some senior or sitting MLAs are found wanting, we will change them. This time I am confidant the winninability will be the sole criteria,” he affirmed.
Sounding confidant after his ongoing Halke Vich Captain and the constituency-wise zonal meetings, he said an ever increasing number of people were pouring in to listen and register their governance related grievances.
On SYL Canal
Amarinder also clarified that the Congress government will not repeal the Section 5 of the Termination of River Water Agreements Act, which guarantees the water supply to states of Rajasthan and Haryana. He ridiculed Badal for claiming to have repealed that section saying it was Mr Badal who had started the process of construction of the SYL by acquiring land and now he was trying to claim credit for something which he is not capable of doing.
On Naresh Yadav’s arrest
Taking a principled stand on registration of cases against the AAP leaders, especially the arrest of Naresh Yadav, on the issue of sacrilege of Quran in Malerkotla, the PCC chief demanded a thorough investigation to ascertain the truth. It was wrong to pronounce someone guilty before the investigations.

Ex-servicemen ruled the day of the police recruitment drive in Mohali. With all 18 candidates passing the dope and physical tests, the indomitable Army spirit was on display.
The physical test included a run of 1,400 metres in 12 minutes and 50 sit-ups.
According to the Superintendent of Police, Harbir Singh Atwal, three per cent of the posts had been reserved for the ex-Army men. While the ex-servicemen said their Army training made test easy, the rest of the candidates said their performance was inspirational.
In three days, only one ex-Army man has flunked the dope test.
While 334 candidates appeared on the third day of the drive, seven failed the dope test and 174 flunked the physical test. Atwal said, “Yesterday, three ex-Army men had failed to clear the physical test, that too, because they did not have the minimum required height of 5’7.” He added that most of the ex-Army men 1,400-meter run in seven minutes.

Brar faces criticism from Cantonment ticket aspirants

Tribune News Service
Jalandhar, July 29

Allotting a ticket for the Jalandhar Cantonment constituency will be a tedious task for the Punjab Congress as over 12 Congress leaders are in a race to become the
candidate from the constituency in the ensuing elections.
Some of the ticket aspirants, Tajinder Bittu, a former chairman of Improvement Trust, and Sonu Dhessi, secretary, PPCC, were not invited to the rally hence they preferred to stay away from the rally.
For today’s rally most of the hoardings were put up by former MLA Jagbir Brar. He is in the forefront for the elections but most of the leaders in the race for ticket alleged that he took this rally as his personal show rather than a joint platform.
Most of the leaders alleged that the venue of the rally was not Cantonment but Kartarpur as
he feared that the leadership here may launch protest against his (Brar) candidature.
The leaders in the race are Jagbir Brar, former MLA Adampur, Kanwanjit Singh Lally, former Improvement Trust chairman, Tajinder Bittu, PPCC secretary, Sonu Dhessi, Daljit Singh Ahluwalia, also former Improvement Trust chairman. Apart from Bittu and Dhessi, other leaders attended the rally.
Interestingly, no senior leader, including Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, MP Santokh Singh Chaudhary, Santosh Chaudhary, Avtar Henry and Kuljit Nagra, in their address exclusively sought support for any of the leaders in race. This shows that party was aware about the present situation in the constituency and no senior leader has projected any one leader.
Kaku Ahluwalia, son of senior leader Daljit Singh Ahluwalia, also the president of Industry and Trade Cell, PPCC, said his father wanted to contest from the Cantonment area as they have a huge base here and seen the past three Assembly election in the area very closely.
When asked why only Brar had installed his hoardings in the rally, he replied, “Actually, this function was organised out of the constituency due to which no other leader preferred to put their hoardings. I think by keeping the venue out of the Cantonment area, Brar tried to make this rally his personal show which is not right.”
Jeet Ram Gachi, a senior leader from the Cantonment area said the venue of the rally should have been in Cantonment only. He alleged no councillor of the area, namely Shashi Bhardwaj, Rajinder Joshi, Bharat Atwal and Rajinder Kuki, was allowed to speak on the stage which sent a wrong signal among the party workers of the area. “We will soon meet the PPCC chief to apprise him about the ground reality of the Cantonment constituency so that only the winnable candidate is given the ticket,” he said.
When asked why Tajinder Bittu and Sonu Dhessi were not invited to the rally, Jagbir said: "When the schedule of the rallies was announced in Chandigarh under the leadership of PPCC chief Captain Amarinder Singh, all these leaders were present there. They were informed about the upcoming rallies and now they are raising issues."

Now, Akali Dal puts up ‘AAP sharam karo’ posters

All-out poster war in city as SAD activists tear off posters calling Majithia a ‘drug peddler’
Tribune News Service
Jalandhar, July 29

A poster war has ensued between the local leaders of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) over the appearance of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in a defamation case in Amritsar today, filed by Punjab Revenue Minister Bikram Majithia.
After the AAP leaders had put up posters against Majithia yesterday which were removed and burnt, it was the turn of the SAD leaders who got made hoardings of huge sizes and put them across the city overnight. The messages in posters of both the parties have been very loud.
While the AAP posters had pictures of national convener Kejriwal saying, “I will say it not once but 1000 times that Bikram Singh Majithia is a drug peddler”, the ones put up by the SAD read, “Aam Aadmi Party sharam karo (Be ashamed Aam Aadmi Party).” Besides, the poster takes potshot against Kejriwal for harming the peace and communal harmony of Punjab. It also has an attacking message against Delhi MLA Naresh Yadav, who has been arrested in a sacrilege incident. It also attacks MP Bhagwant Mann on alcoholism charges.
It concludes with a message in Punjabi with the meaning, “We are with Bikram Majithia, who has always worked for the welfare of Punjab and Punjabi youth”. The pictures of party activists have been put up beneath the SAD poster.
The YAD workers led by activist Charanjit Singh Minta carried out another protest wherein a message read, “Kejriwal is an enemy of Punjab waters.”

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday dared Punjab Revenue Minister Bikram Majithia to arrest him in six months or he would arrest him (Majithia).
Kejriwal, who along with party leader Sanjay Singh, later appeared in a local court here in a defamation case filed against them by Majithia, said Majithia had flourished his drug trade that had affected most houses in Punjab. “It’s not only me, (Ashish) Khetan or Sanjay Singh, lakhs of people of Punjab have repeatedly said that Majithia is a drug trafficker,” he said.
(Follow The Tribune on Facebook; and Twitter @thetribunechd)
AAP volunteers were seen carrying the placards saying, “Main ek var nahin hazaar var kahanga, Bikram Majithia chitte da taskar hai (I will repeatedly say that Majithia smuggles drugs).”
Kejriwal said if the Badal government could book the Delhi CM in a defamation case, he could understand how the common man was being harassed in Punjab.
Majithia and his supporters also reached the court complex. Around 15,000 to 20,000 volunteers of the AAP had gathered near Circuit House to support Kejriwal. Heavy police force had been deployed en route to district courts from Circuit House while Police Commissioner Amar Singh Chahal himself supervised the security arrangements.
The police stopped AAP volunteers around 1 km away from the court while a large number of SAD workers had already reached the court complex.
Both Kejriwal and Sanjay Singh furnished bail bonds of Rs 40,000 each. The case will now come up for hearing on October 15.

Muktsar, July 28

Posters listing government’s achievements, schemes and the picture of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal pasted on state-owned buses were found torn in the district.
The Punjab Roadways authorities have blamed the staff and warned them of stern action if someone was found guilty. A visit to the local bus stand today revealed that the buses with torn posters were parked in the workshop.
Charanjit Singh Brar, General Manager, Punjab Roadways, Muktsar, said: “The government’s publicity posters were pasted on nearly 20-22 buses a week ago. But some drivers and conductors tried to remove these from two-three buses. They have admitted to it and agreed to replace these by paying from their own pocket.” Rejecting the charge, some drivers and conductors said some passengers might have tried to remove the posters. “But we have contributed money and placed order to print 13 such posters,” a staff member said.

Chandigarh, July 28
The Punjab and Haryana High Court today confirmed the interim bail granted to journalist-turned-politician Kanwar Sandhu.
Interim bail was also granted to former police Cat Gurmeet Singh alias Pinki.
Sandhu had allegedly managed to enter Patiala Central Jail, in connivance with jail authorities, without making an entry to meet an inmate Balwant Singh Rajoana.
“Even if it is presumed that the petitioner in the capacity as a journalist has visited an inmate pursuant to some irregularities committed by the jail officials, it may be considered as an irregularity. No offence appears to have been committed by the petitioner,” Justice MMS Bedi had observed earlier.

End the Arvind Kejriwal show: An open letter to AAP supporters

Arvind Kejriwal - clad in muffler, with his bizarre antics and natakbaaz cough has taken over the reins and purged those with backbone or morality

Dear AAP supporters,
I once respected and admired your movement, born as it was in those heady days of Jantar Mantar. It was a true citizens’ movement, led by the newly empowered, educated, middle class that was fed up of a system reeking of entitlement and corruption. I cheered on Anna Hazare, and I too had goosebumps at the youth, the energy and the intelligence of the movement.
Alas, it was not to last. As with most revolutions, after the pure beginnings, a demagogue arose to steal the stage, and use the movement for his own purposes. Before we knew it, Arvind Kejriwal – clad in muffler, with his bizarre antics and natakbaaz cough had taken over the reins and purged those with backbone or morality – Anna Hazare, Yogendra Yadav, Kiran Bedi. The moral core of the party was dead, and the party was now little more than the Arvind Kejriwal Show.
The AAP today is just an Indian echo of the many populist movements that have broken out across the globe. These are fueled by our sensationalist news media and social media environment where truth, research, and facts are less important than snappy slogans, antics, and ratings. Be it Corbyn in the UK, Syriza in Greece, Le Pen in France, Grillo in Italy or Donald Trump in the USA, the story is the same.

And just like in the rest of the world, such a populist is dangerous.
For these people expertise doesn’t seem to matter. Kejriwal’s economic plans would not pass scrutiny by an eighth standard economics teacher. His vision of huge expenditures, and ruinous taxes on business, would rapidly reduce our economy to that of Greece – hollowed out and bankrupt. But of course, “free wi-fi, free college, tax the rich” is such a wonderful slogan, why bother with pesky logic? Just tell the people what they want to hear.
Like other populists, Kejriwal knows the power of an Enemy. Kejriwal attacks businessmen and politicians. Businessmen, he says, are the root of all evil. No one, in his tax-inspector eyes, can succeed in business without cheating. Success is something to be suspicious of, not something to celebrate.Of course, in reality, in a country of entrepreneurs and family businesses, most business is a force for good – creating jobs, providing goods, services, and development. In fact, corruption exists largely due to people like Kejriwal – a tax inspector with little understanding of economics, and a need to create thousands of rules to control every aspect of the market. These complicated rules lead to a proliferation of lazy and corrupt officials that suck the life out of the country through thousands of small bribes and blackmails. In such an environment, crooked practices thrive.
Most international populists rail against the “politicians”. Rather than actually going about the business of governing and taking tough decisions, it is easier to paint everyone as a thief – Sab Chor Hai – and claim to be above the system. So it is with Kejriwal. Despite being CM of Delhi, Kejriwal does not hold a single portfolio, and seems shockingly uninterested in the nitty-gritty of actual governance (fobbing it off to his Deputy CM). A simple traffic experiment like his odd-even scheme was made into a huge drama with daily headlines. Mumbai’s traffic police quietly handle far more complex problems on a daily basis without making them into national news items.
Just like the Donald Trumps of the world, Kejriwal understands that today’s Reality Television is more important that Actual Reality. Thus the bizarre spectacle of various assaults on Kejriwal, always conveniently within camera range (ever wonder why no other leader gets assaulted as much as Kejriwal? Or why Kejriwal never gets attacked when he is off camera? Just as Trump shot to political fame by funding an investigation into whether Obama was actually born in America, Kejriwal gets attention by attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Hence, the disastrous challenge to PM Modi in Varanasi, and the ever increasing volume of abuse and conspiracy theories. For a populist demagogue, facts and results are not relevant. Success is counted in the only currency that matters – Ratings.Unfortunately today, the more outlandish the claim, the crazier the conspiracy theory, and the more unparliamentary the language, the better it is for ratings. However, in order to maintain attention (and distract from lack of achievement) one has to create ever more outlandish spectacles.
This has to end. We now have the spectacle of a sitting Chief Minister accusing the Prime Minister of India of planning to murder him! Do we want to live in a country where the boundaries of civil discourse permit such wild and baseless accusations for the sake of television ratings? Do we want our polity to be “Trumpified”?

I call upon all remaining supporters of the AAP to take back their movement. To return to the positivity and hope of the Anna Hazare days, to kick out the fakes, and the natakbaazes. It time to return to the soul of the movement – a fight against corruption, a fight for the rights guaranteed in our constitution, and at its core, a fight by the educated classes for a right to enjoy the Indian dream. I know all of you want what is best for the country, you must start by ending the Arvind Kejriwal Show.

Shahkot (Jalandhar), July 28

Punjab Congress president Capt Amarinder Singh today released “documentary evidence” to prove that Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had acquired land for the SYL canal in Punjab.“I challenge Badal to deny or dispute a single word of what I am saying about his role in acquiring land for the SYL to please his friend Devi Lal,” he said during an interaction with the media on the sidelines of the 14th session of “Halke Vich Captain.“Badal issued orders for land acquisition on February 20, 1978, vide notification no: 113/5/SYL and 121/5/SYL under Section 4 of the Land Acquisition Act. With this, the process of land acquisition for the SYL canal started,” Amarinder claimed.Badal then wrote to the Haryana Government vide letters no: 7/78-IW(i)-78/23617 demanding a payment of Rs3 crore more as he had already taken Rs2 crore for land acquisition. This was in pursuance of an agreement between him and Devi Lal, then Chief Minister of Haryana. The PPCC president claimed this was acknowledged by Devi Lal in the Haryana Vidhan Sabha on March 1, 1978, where he proudly claimed that it was because of his personal relationship with Badal that he had convinced him for land acquisition for the SYL. “For personal relationship with Devi Lal, Badal put Punjab’s interests at stake,” he said.
He claimed that Badal had also decided to hold a function to lay the foundation stone and Devi Lal was to preside over. He said the matter got delayed and later both Badal and Devi Lal lost their respective elections.
Amarinder asked Badal to spell out his next course of action in case the Supreme Court decided the case against Punjab.

Mann gets two days to change reply given to Parliament panel

NEW DELHI: Aam Aadmi Party’s parliamentarian Bhagwant Mann — accused of breaching Parliament security — got two days to change his written reply to the Lok Sabha panel, which is probing his act to suggest action.
In a five-page letter to the nine-member MPs’ panel, Mann maintained that Prime Minister Narendra Modi be called before it for compromising national security. When Mann appeared before the panel on Thursday afternoon, chairman Kirit Somaiya slammed him for dragging the PM while tendering ‘most humble apology’ for uploading a video that showed his journey from his Delhi home to Parliament.
“You are damaging your case,” Somaiya warned.
Mann maintained that he didn’t violate any law. He questioned why broadcast vans are “habitually stationed” near the main gate—seen in his video— and claimed the virtual House tour in Lok Sabha website also shows what’s inside Parliament, after being accused of exposing the route to enter Parliament.Shiv Sena’s Anandrao Adsul said in the meeting, “I have spent 20 years in Parliament but never thought of doing such a video. You have come here two years ago, and did something unthinkable.”
BJP’s Meenakshi Lekhi asked if anyone had stopped him from filming and when did Mann come to know that he has done the wrong thing by shooting the video. The AAP MP from Sangrur, Punjab, said no body stopped him or told him that he is not doing the right thing.BJD’s Bhartruhari Mahtab didn’t question Mann but AIADMK MP said Mann’s act was unbecoming of a parliamentarian. Mann will re-appear before the panel on Monday.
Mann had recorded an amateur video on his phone of his drive from his home in South Avenue near Parliament to inside the building, briefly detailing the security arrangements on his way and then posted it on Facebook. He has been asked to skip Parliament till the issue is not settled.

Kejriwal court appearance set to become a solidarity show

AAP VS THEM Aam Aadmi Party is looking at the perfect setting to send across a strong message to its opponents; Delhi chief minister playing the ‘victim card’

CHANDIGARH: A day after Delhi chief minister and AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal asked his party-men to gear up for an “ugly battle” with the powers that be through a video message, his maiden appearance in a defamation case in Amritsar court on Friday has been turned into a major political event. The party has given an open call to all its workers and supporters to reach the Amritsar Circuit House (where he is staying) by 9am to show solidarity with their “beleaguered” leader.
Kejriwal landed in Amritsar on Thursday evening and will be appearing in the district courts in a defamation case filed by revenue minister Bikram Singh Majithia. Majithia has dragged Kejriwal and other AAP leaders to court for tarnishing his family’s reputation on the issue of drugs.
Kejriwal’s visit comes at a time when he is hitting back at the Modi-led BJP government at the Centre for indulging in “oppressive vendetta politics”, targeting his MLAs and putting them behind bars on various accounts. And in Amritsar, Kejriwal is looking at the perfect setting to send a strong message to his opponents. He intends to play the ideal victim of vendetta politics, who is paying a price for standing up against ‘repression’ of the ruling SAD-BJP alliance in the state, but with the multitude on his side. The district police are gearing up for the hearing which is likely to take the shape of an impromptu rally and the AAP is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that all roads lead to Amritsar. The party’s social media channels are constantly calling supporters to reach Amritsar and leaders across the state have been asked to muster crowds for the “event”. The masses that gather in Amritsar tomorrow could prove to be a turning point in the rookie party’s eventful journey towards the assembly polls early next year.
The show in Amritsar also becomes significant in terms of it being touted as an antiMajithia “outpouring” of public sentiment. The AAP has used the defamation case against its leaders as an opportunity to launch a scathing attack on Majithia. In the past week, AAP supporters and some who seem like election ticket hopefuls have put up posters at several places in the state ‘vouching’ that the allegations levelled against Majithia are true. In these posters, the AAP supporter/leader is openly challenging the police to nab him for saying so, adding that Majithia should file a defamation suit against him as well.
The party has also widely circulated a telephone number asking people who believed that allegations against Majithia are true to give a missed call to register their response. The efforts of the party are also visible on the social media where antiMajithia sentiment was trending this morning.
Besides Kejriwal, the party’s in-charge in Punjab Sanjay Singh and it’s Delhi dialogue commission vice-chairman Ashish Khetan will be appearing. The suit was filed on May 20 under Sections 499, 500, 34, 120-B of the Code of Criminal Procedure and court summons were handed over to Kejriwal two days ago.
In the evening, Kejriwal will be visiting the Dalit family allegedly beaten up by cops at Sukhera Bodla village in Jalalabad, the deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal’s constituency.

Kishor’s pack takes charge, local Cong leaders cry foul

KANGANNA (JALANDHAR): Poll strategist Prashant Kishor’s scheme of things at the state Congress chief Captain Amarinder Singh’s events is persistently not going well with the party leaders. On Thursday, Kishor’s Indian Political Action Committee (IPAC) volunteers created embarrassing situation for the party again during the ‘Halke Vich Captain’ show here when they directed local leaders to leave the venue of a press conference to be addressed by Captain Amarinder.
For the media briefing, the IPAC volunteers had put chair only for Captain and they didn’t want any other person around. However, the idea was vehemently opposed by the local leaders who questioned the rationale behind this. PPCC spokesperson Dr Navjot Dahiya, former minister Brij Bhupinder Lalli and Laddi Sherrowalia did not relent and argued with the IPAC volunteers. The volunteers complained to programme coordinator who got furious and pulled out his team saying “Jo karte hain karne do (Let them do what they want)”.
On July 24, in Kartarpur, MP Santokh Chaudhary left the venue in protest, alleging misbehaviour by the IPAC team that did not allow him to sit beside Captain during a similar programme. Chaudhary returned only after Amarinder intervened.
On Wednesdat at Nangal, an ex-MLA who organised the programme was asked to leave Amarinder alone during a press conference. The matter reportedly has already reached the party high command.
“The role of local leaders has been restricted only to bring crowds. The leaders face humiliation in front of supporters when they are not allowed to even stand behind Capt. I fail to understand what is the rationale behind this?” said a senior party leaders.
A few leaders have already complained to the Congress high command about the “high headedness” of Kishor’s men.
When this correspondent asked the PCC chief on the issue, he defended the Kishor’s team, saying ‘Halke Vich Captain’ was entirely an IPAC show and not that of the party.
Payal Kamat, a senior IPAC functionary, said the event had been planned in consultation of the PCC chief and there was nothing like “ignoring the party”. “This event is aimed at projecting ‘brand Amarinder’. There is another programme where Captain freely meets party workers,” she said.

Amritsar MC’s palace sealing campaign leaves marriage parties out in rain

NO NEW VENUES, PEOPLE WHO BOOKED MARRIAGE PALACES RUNNING HELTER-SKELTER
AMRITSAR: The sealing of marriage palaces here has left booking parties high and dry in the monsoon wedding season.About 10 days ago, the Punjab and Haryana high court issued orders to close these illegal banquet halls by August 31. With 40 of 71 venues shut in just one day since the action began on July 27, the owners and the guests have no time to recover. The places were booked a month in advance. “My brother’s wedding reception is two days from now. How do we find a new place so fast?” said Pritpal Singh, whose family lost the Taran Wala Brigde venue for July 31. “The manager declined to book Harjinder Palace,” said Amritsar’s Jagsirat Singh. “My sister’s wedding is due and there’s no venue available.”
Harpreet Singh, owner of Vicky Palace on the Tarn Taran road said he had returned the booking amount for two functions in the coming week. “Like me,” he said, “many palace owners stare at losses.” Also, thousands of workers are about to lose their jobs. “I brought my family from Khemkaran (Tarn Taran district), 70 kilometres from Amritsar. Where do I take them now?” said sweeper Nirmal Singh.
The owners who gathered at Ravindra Palace on the Chamrang road said the civic body and the administration should have given them a sixmonth notice, so that they could fulfil the requirements of legal business. Owners’ association president Jagdeep Singh Narula said all palaces were licensed and paying nine taxes and other fees for 25 years. “Still we remain illegal. We don’t know what more the government expects from us.”
The sealing notice states that the palaces were neither opened without the government’s permission nor fulfilling its criteria. The court has asked the deputy commissioner, municipal commissioner, and the principal secretary of the local bodies ministry to appear before it after sealing the palaces or go to jail

EX-SOLDIER FOUND DEAD; MURDER CASE REGISTERED

BATALA: The dead body of a 40-year-old ex-serviceman, who was missing since Monday, was recovered from a drain near village Khajanakot under Kotli Surat Malhi police station on Wednesday evening.
Station house officer (SHO), Kotli Surat Malhi police station, Balwinder Singh said on Wednesday evening, he received information that a dead body was lying on the edge of the drain. During investigation, the deceased was identified as Chamkaur Singh of Khajanakot, who was missing from his home from the last two days, the SHO said.
The SHO added that the deceased had a deep injury mark on the head which reflected that the accused was hit with a sharpedged weapon and then thrown into the drain. The police has registered a murder case under Section 302 of the IPC against unidentified persons. “We are working on various theories. During initial investigation, we have got leads and the accused will be nabbed soon,” he said.

Captain party’s popular leader in Punjab, says Asha Kumari

Punjab affairs in-charge of Congress Asha Kumari along with party leaders showing victory sign during the workers’ meeting in Patiala on Thursday.

PATIALA: Although the clamour is growing within the party for Punjab Congress chief Captain Amarinder Singh’s name to be formally announced as the chief minister candidate; Asha Kumari, party in-charge of Punjab, kept mum on this question but said he was party’s popular candidate and the party would decide whatever people wanted here. She said the story of Congress revival would start with its victory in the coming assembly elections here. She was here in Patiala to address the workers meeting that was attended by local Congress leaders and party legislators, including Brahm Mohinder, Lal Singh, Hardyal Singh Kamboj and Preneet Kaur.
She told the local media that winnability would be party’s main criteria and the process of selection of the candidates would conclude soon.
Slamming the SAD-BJP alliance in Punjab, she said Punjab was on the brink of collapse in every field due to bad governance of the ruling government.
“With the Aam Adami Party exposing itself every day, people are ready to support Congress to revive the development of the state,” she said.
On the enforcement directorate summons to Amarinder’s son, she said it was a politically motivated case as BJP’s Arun Jaitely who headed the ED department as finance minister was trying to avenge his humiliating defeat in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls by falsely implicating Amarinder’s family members.

Ex-MP tears into SAD

Amritsar, July 28
Former BJP MP Navjot Singh Sidhu today took on Deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal over the latter’s statement that he had cordial relations with him (Sidhu).
Accusing the SAD of ignoring him during his tenure as the Amritsar MP and scuttling his projects for the holy city, Sidhu said, “I was never invited to the meetings regarding development projects. I was also not invited when Rs 2,000 crore were announced for the city before the Lok Sabha elections. Is this what you call cordial relations?”
Sidhu said he was not allowed to contest the 2014 LS elections as the SAD wanted to make Harsimrat Badal a Union Minister.
He said six of his projects were scuttled by the Punjab Government: the Sports Complex, the widening of the Bhandari bridge, a solid waste management system, plying of 150 AC buses, CCTV cameras under the Safe City Project, and the SSSS flyover-underpass project. — TNS

Shahkot (Jal), July 28

During ‘Halke Wich Captain’ programme at Shahkot by the Punjab Congress, residents and Congress workers who attended the function in large numbers, told PPCC chief Captain Amarinder Singh that Akalis have been resorting to political vendetta and registering fake FIRs against them.
In this programme, as many as 5,002 petitions were received by Congress from residents and workers.
The political rally was held at a resort located on the Nakodar-Malsian road. It witnessed a mammoth gathering. All leaders in the race of tickets, namely Navjot Dahiya (PPCC spokesperson), a close aide of Manpreet Badal, Brij Bhupinder Singh Lalli, former minister of Punjab and Hardev Singh Laddi Sherowalia, nephew of Darbara Singh, former governor of Rajasthan, made their presence felt with their show of strength. Dahiya has reportedly called several women from various villages to interact with the PPCC chief to apprise him about their problems. The residents raised several queries before Capt on drugs, unemployment, lack of schools, colleges, fake FIRs and infighting within Congress leaders.
A resident, Surat Singh, said the youth was facing unemployment due to poor policies of the government. Amarinder said, “Unemployment is an issue all over Punjab. The issue is that Punjab’s population is 2.90 crore of which 90 lakh people are looking for jobs. We are preparing a programme which will be a part of the manifesto. We are promising over 55 lakh jobs. One job, per family.” Another resident Jaswant Singh of Muridwal asked that will Congress be able to tackle drug menace? To which Capt replied, Congress would wipe out drug issue in four weeks. On a resident Gurpreet’s query to free Punjab from RSS, PPCC chief said RSS should not create ruckus but foster peace for development and any tension by them would be dealt with strict hands.
Another resident Ratan Lal told Capt that he was beaten by an Akali leader Baldev Singh but the police never took any action against him. To this Capt replied that Congress would cancel all fake FIRs and put all Akali culprits behind the bars.
Another resident Ajay Kumar said Punjab has 12,700 villages, if government opens one gym in every village, then over 12,700 youngsters would get employment and youth would also stay away from drugs. Capt, while appreciating the query, said he has already made a committee for this and sports club for boys and girls would be opened in every village.
On corruption, Capt said, “Congress would make a Lokpal, not like present government in which Badal’s relatives were the member, but ours will be headed by ex-judge and even CM could not intervene in its functioning.”
Badals’ monopoly in transport business exposed
Amrik Singh Gill said Sukhbir Badal’s transportation policies were bad. Around 85 per cent was Badal’s transportation and 15 per cent with other players in the state. Earlier, they finished Malwa in transportation and now they were trying to end the PRTC and Punjab Roadways. They have taken over small transportation companies by fraud. He said if Badals continue to capture all transportation companies, then government transport would be wiped out from the state one day. To this, Capt replied that Badals have monopoly over transport business but Congress would break the same. “I will make a PPCC committee for transportation. Impressed by your views, you will be a member of this committee and your recommendations will be considered on priority.”
Workers urge Captain to declare candidate for Shahkot
One of the workers asked Captain that three leaders were campaigning separately in the Shahkot constituency and all of them were claiming that their ticket was assured by high command and they also resort to leg pulling. “Capt sahib please clear who will be our candidate so that we can run along with him to win election,” said a worker. On this Capt replied, “First of all who will be the candidate, it is the prerogative of Congress president. Only winnable candidate will be given ticket. I urge you to support candidate, whosoever he is, without any selfish interests. If Akali Dal comes again, Punjab will be destroyed. AAP is anyways filled with people from UP and Bihar.”

Lashing out at former Rajya Sabha MP Navjot Singh Sidhu, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today said he would meet the same fate as that of former CM Surjit Singh Barnala and former Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal. He said they both were sent to “political oblivion” by people for “ditching” their mother party.
Addressing a gathering at a Sangat Darshan at Tapa in Bhadaur, Badal said Sidhu had “deceived” his party in the hope of a “bright future” but people of the state would teach him a lesson for treachery.Badal said AAP was proving to be a haven for all fugitives and unprincipled politicians.
On state Congress chief Capt Amarinder Singh, Badal said the MP had a proven “anti-farmer” track record. He said the SAD-BJP alliance had been providing free power to farmers but he had discontinued this facility during his tenure, putting enormous burden on farmers.
