AAP files complaint against CM

The Aam Aadmi Party media incharge of Chabbewal Dr Kulwant Singh has filed a criminal complaint against Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal in the court of Judicial Magistrate Prabhjot Kaur seeking action against him under Section 295-A for hurting the religious sentiments.

The complaint said that bicycles being distributed by the state government to schoolgirls had Badal’s photo pasted on the front carrier while brave Sikh general Mai Bhago’s name was printed on the chin cover.

The complainant said that feet of the girls riding the cycle touch Mai Bhago’s name continuously. It has hurt not only his sentiments but also religious sentiments of the entire Sikh community. Advocates Navin Jairath and Manish Handa filed the complaint in the court and the next date of hearing was August 5.

The AAP leaders Sandeep Saini, Nirmal singh Hakumatpuri, Ajaib Singh, Mani Gogia Dinesh Sidhu, Harpal Lada, Ashok Rana and Tarun Gupta said that Badals often speak about the Panth being in danger when they themselves were insulting the community. They alleged that Badals had no respect for sentiments of people. Earlier too there had been a similar case of having photographs of Mata Chintpurni on Tirath Yatra buses near the footpads. The AAP leaders demanded that Chief Minister Badal should also be booked as was done in the case of their leader Ashish Khetan.

They said that if a FIR was not lodged, another criminal complaint of hurting religious sentiments would be filed against him in the court

Liquor ban not feasible: Amarinder

Punjab Congress chief Capt Amarinder Singh here today reiterated that the party, on coming to power, would root out the drug menace from the state in four weeks. He termed liquor as an intoxicant, but said it was not feasible to ban its sale in the state as it was a major revenue earner.

“The consumption of liquor can’t be compared with that of drugs. Those addicted to heroin and poppy husk are at far greater risk than liquor consumers,” Amarinder told The Tribune.

Replying to a query by a local resident during his ‘Halke Vich Captain’ programme, he said, “This will be my last election. I want to see you people happy by solving all your problems.”

He said the forms of all ticket applicants would be sent to the high command after August 15. “We not only want to give the ticket early to the candidates but are also keen to ensure that there are no rebel candidates. The state government has 160 posts of chairperson in various departments and these will be ‘allotted’ to those who fail to make the cut,” Amarinder added.

Capt said his son, Raninder Singh, would appear before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) prior to leaving for the Olympics. He added that Raninder, being the president of the National Rifle Association of India, was busy completing the formalities for sending the shooting contingent to the Olympics.

Capt pays lunch bill

After the lunch with his team at Bansi da Dhaba on the outskirts of Malout, Amarinder gave money to his personal security officer to pay the bill. The latter did the needful and returned the balance to him.

State govt has failed people: Bittu

Tarn Taran: Patti and Majitha are among the four worst-affected Vidhan Sabha constituencies in the state in the nine years of the SAD-BJP rule, said Ravneet Singh Bittu, Congress MP from Ludhiana. He was addressing a party rally in Patti, 25 km from here on Friday. He said that the other two constituencies were Lambi and Jalalabad. Bittu said that the candidates for these four seats would be announced in the first list of party candidates. Bittu said the people have set their mind on the Congress as the state government has failed to serve them properly. — OC

CM face before polls: Bhagwant

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will announce its CM face before the polls.

MP and head of the Campaign Committee Bhagwant Mann said that the party would contest the elections with a Chief Ministerial candidate. He was referring to the allegations that the party has no one to project as the probable CM in the state.

The national convenor of the party, Arvind Kejriwal would listen to the people’s ‘Man Ki Baat’ through a special programme named ‘Talk to AK’.

People can share their woes, grievances and suggestions with Kejriwal through ‘Talk to AK’ for which a special website www.talktoak.com has been prepared. People could even opt for voice calls and SMS chat, Mann said while addressing the media here today and added that people from anywhere in the world could contact Kejriwal, who would reply their queries as CM.

Asked whether the programme would be on the pattern of Man ki Baat programme of PM Narindra Modi, Mann said “No, it will be entirely different as in ‘Man Ki Baat’ Modi is imposing his views on the people, but Kejriwal will listen people’s ‘Man ki Baat’.

Replying to a query, Mann termed the sangat darshan’ programme of CM Parkash Singh Badal as ‘Akali Darshan’ in which only SAD workers are allowed to meet CM and people with genuine grievances are forcibly kept away. On the comparison of AAP with ISIS by Sukhbir Badal, Mann said that with the growing popularity of AAP, SAD-BJP-Congress have gone into ‘frustrated mode”, which is evident from their irrelevant remarks like terming them as naxalites or ISIS, he added.

Weapon licence fee funds charitable works

Guns and charity don’t go together – or do they? Arms licence applicants in the district are funding charitable works, courtesy the administration.

Every applicant has to pay a non-refundable fee of Rs 10,000, while the charges for renewing the licence are Rs 5,000. The amount collected is then divided among five organisations — the Red Cross, administration-run gaushalas (cow shelters), the Drug De-Addiction Centre, the District Child Welfare Council – which manages a deaf and dumb school and an old-age home — and the Suwidha Centre. Earlier, these organisations had to await the release of funds from the government.

In the past three months, the administration has collected Rs 33 lakh, according to DC Ramvir Singh. The application fee was mandatory under the Sukhmani Society rules.

In other districts, such as Bathinda, Muktsar and Faridkot, a major chunk of the collections goes to the District Red Cross Society

Harsimrat should quit over SYL: Bhattal

Ludhiana: Congress leader and former CM Rajinder Kaur Bhattal has said that the Akalis are misleading the people by doing antics like submitting memorandum on the SYL issue. She said that if they are sincere about the issue, Harsimrat Kaur Badal should resign from the Cabinet in protest and the Akalis should stage a dharna against the Centre. She stated this at a political rally here. On AAP, Bhattal said that Kejriwal deliberately does something or the other and then apologises to the people. “Kejriwal has apologised so many times that he should be named ‘Maafiwal’ instead,” she said. — TNS

Villagers attack BDPO after land auction

Block Development and Panchayat Officer (BDPO) Davinder Kaur’s vehicle was pelted with stones by villagers when she was returning from Mirje Ke village in Ghall Khurd block after an auction of shamlat land last evening.

Davinder said she oversaw the auction, which was held in a gurdwara despite opposition from a section of the villagers. She said the land was allotted to some persons from adjoining Bhai Ka Vara village who came up with the highest bid.

The BDPO added that as soon as the auction was completed, armed youths tried to block her way. However, she managed to enter her car. She had barely left the village when some residents started hurling stones.

On the basis of the officer’s complaint, the police booked Yadwinder Singh, Sukhmander Singh, Jagtar Singh, Simranjit Singh and Laddi, all residents of Mirje Ke village, besides 15-20 unidentified persons, under Sections 353, 332 and 186 of the IPC.

SEALING OF ILLEGAL MARRIAGE PALACES

Assn up in arms against move, Cong lends support

The Amritsar Marriage Palaces and Resort Association is up in arms against the decision to seal “illegal” marriage palaces. It has threatened that it will not allow the administration to seal any such marriage palace or resort and will gherao the Deputy Commissioner office and even the Chief Minister, if the need be.

The association held a meeting which was headed by PPCC vice-president and former MLA Jasbir Singh Dimpa. Dimpa said they would submit a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner tomorrow in this connection.

There are around 247 marriage palaces and resorts all over the district. They have been operating for the past 30 years. KS Narula, president of the association, said owners of these marriage palaces were giving all sorts of taxes imposed by the Municipal Corporation, the Excise and Taxation Department and the district administration. He claimed that the MC issued them licences on a yearly basis.

“All of a sudden, the district administration has woken up to the illegality of these marriage palaces, which have been operating for the past 30 years. The authorities did not issue any notice before this. They did not inform us where are we lacking in following the rules and regulations. We are ready to pay whatever genuine taxes they impose and make amendments in the buildings, but at least they should tell us what are the shortcomings,” he said.

Narula said the association would not allow the sealing drive to take place and if the situation turned ugly, it would be the responsibility of the administration only.

Dimpa said the Congress stood with the association and it would not allow sealing. He said thousands of persons working in these palaces would be rendered unemployed. There was no concrete policy of the Punjab Government regarding the marriage palaces and resorts. They were paying huge taxes and contributing to the state revenue. He said the Congress would also keep the regularisation of these marriage palaces as a part of its manifesto.

The Deputy Commissioner yesterday ordered the MC, the Amritsar Development Authority, PUDA, the SDMs and the Police Department to seal illegal marriage palaces in the district.

AAP fortifies legal cell to deal with ‘false’ cases

As the claims of registration of false cases against its workers and volunteers are increasing in the election year, the Aam Aadmi Party has decided to strengthen its legal cell.

The party today appointed three lawyers to the posts of zonal secretary and sector in-charge.

Senior advocate Jatinder Roy Khattar has been appointed as the sector in-charge of Bathinda while advocate Amandeep Mahal has been given the same post for Mansa district.

Advocate Gurkirpal Singh has been appointed as the zonal secretary.

Avatar Singh Sidhu, zone in-charge of the AAP’s legal cell, said the party had fortified its legal wing in the wake of rising reports of registration of false and baseless cases against AAP supporters.

“We are determined to fight all such fake cases tooth and nail. We have decided to go full throttle to defeat the false designs behind such cases,” Sidhu said.

He said journalists, who too were being pressurised and dragged to court for writing truth, would be helped by the legal cell. Any volunteer or worker of AAP or mediaperson can approach him to fight legal battle against injustice, Khattar added. He said he would fight their cases free of cost. — TNS

SAD tutoring Akal Takht jathedar: Mann

CHANDIGARH: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) campaign committee head Bhagwant Mann on Friday slammed Akal Takth jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh for giving “political statements”, claiming it proved he had been “tutored” by Akalis.Mann said the jathedar’s warning to AAP leaders to desist from meddling in Sikh religious issues proved he was a political person. “The jathedar referred to the AAP manifesto as a bundle of lies. Is this not a political statement?” questioned Mann, talking to mediapersons here on Friday.Reacting on controversies surrounding the party in Punjab, he said: “We have humbly admitted our mistakes and apologised to the people of Punjab. But we are not going to apologise to Badals or Akalis. Sikh religion forgives those who accept their mistake.”

Defending the involvement of AAP leaders from outside Punjab, Mann said none of them were holding key positions in the state. “AAP works as an all India team. I addressed over a hundred rallies in Delhi before the polls,” he said.

Informing the people about Arvind Kejriwal’s ‘Talk to AK’ programme scheduled at 11am for July 17, Mann said Punjabis would take the lead in participating in it. He said Kejriwal will listen to people’s grievances and suggestions -- through the website www.talktoak.com – instead of “imposing” his thoughts on people like during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Mann ki Baat’.

Reacting to Captain Amarinder Singh’s allegation that he comes drunk to the Lok Sabha, Mann questioned how the state Congress chief could know what happened in the parliament as he rarely attended it. “In the past three sessions, Amarinder has zero attendance,” he said.

Kejriwal smells a conspiracy, wants case against magazine

CHANDIGARH: Smelling a conspiracy in the use of his “photoshopped” picture on the cover of a weekly news magazine, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday wrote to the Delhi police commissioner, demanding a “thorough probe”.

In a letter addressed to Alok Verma, Kejriwal sought registration of a criminal case against the magazine, while also asking the police to investigate the possibility of his political opponents — the Shiromani Akali Dal and Congress — conspiring with the magazine.The news magazine had, in its Hindi edition of July 20, carried an image of Kejriwal dressed as a “nihang”, inviting strong voices of protests from Sikh organisations. A complaint against the magazine has also been given to the Delhi Police by All India Sikh Students Federation (AISSF) president Karnail Singh Peermohammad.

Kejriwal said the image has hurt religious sentiments of Sikhs, and a criminal case under various sections of the Indian law should be lodged against the magazine. “The image on the magazine has been prepared using Photoshop and my photograph has been used without my knowledge. I suspect the Congress and SAD are behind the move. It is all a part of a cleverly planned conspiracy. There is a need to uncover it. The Delhi police should take this matter seriously,” he stated in the demi official letter.

FATEHGARH SAHIB: Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) president Simranjit Singh Mann on Friday alleged that he was put under house arrest by the police on Friday.

The radical leader said the action came after he announced the July 17 protest march to Bargari, the epicentre of Sikh protests against sacrilege last year. Mann had announced the march three days back, against the alleged failure of the Punjab Police and the government to arrest those responsible for sacrilege.

Mann said party workers from other areas of Punjab were also detained in the morning, while some leaders managed to escape. Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Harcharan Singh Bhullar, however, refuted the allegation. “Mann was not put under house arrest. It was only a routine affair,” said Bhullar.Leaders of other radical outfits and organisers of the ‘Sarbat Khalsa’, including Mohkam Singh of the United Akali Dal, were also “arrested” along with Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) rebel and former Golden Temple ‘ragi’ Baldev Singh Wadala.

Blaming deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal for vitiating the state’s atmosphere, the radical outfit Dal Khalsa termed the arrests “unjustified” and “unwarranted”.

“The proposed march is neither unlawful nor a threat to peace and communal harmony,” said Dal Khalsa president Harpal Singh Cheema. “Police are acting against law. People are disillusioned with the ruling party. They have made up their mind to unseat Badals for their follies and inaction,” he said.

AMRITSAR: Balbir Singh, who as ardasia (one who conducts prayers in a gurdwara) denied ‘siropa’ to chief minister Parkash Singh Badal at the Golden Temple last month, was picked him up from house on Friday. Police said it was “by mistake” and dropped him back.

In the morning, police took him to the B Division police station. The ardasia confirms it, while the top brass of the city police denies it.

“Police barged in around 6am when I was doing prayer. They said the station house officer (SHO) had called me. But after 20 minutes at the police station, the SHO came over to say sorry and told his team to drop me home,” he said.

“He said they had picked me up by mistake,” said Balbir Singh. “The cops gave me respect and said nothing wrong. They have neither come to place before and nor called me ever. It is just because of the government that they must have thought that I was going to the July 17 protest (of the hardliners) at Bargari (Faridkot). If I go there, it’ll be for Guru Granth Sahib. I am a sewadar and my work is to do sewa (volunteer service). I have nothing to do with any political party. If I feel it’s right to go, I will,” he said.Police also picked up a few other supporters of the march that Sarbat Khalsa jathedars are going to lead. Mohkam Singh of the United Akali Dal and hardliner Baldev Singh Wadala are among them.

Prohibition not feasible: Captain

SAYS DRINKING CAN’T BE COMPARED WITH DRUG ABUSE

MALOUT (MUKTSAR): Punjab Congress president Captain Amarinder Singh said on Friday that prohibition was not feasible and practical in the state, and drinking couldn’t be compared with drug abuse.

He said prohibition had not worked in many states and only encouraged smuggling and making of illicit liquor. He said liquor, being an important source of revenue for the state, can’t be compared with drugs.

Addressing the media at his ‘Halke Vich Captain’ public interaction programme in the Malout assembly segment, he declined that there were differences within the party over “VIP culture”. He said if the Congress came to power in Punjab, it would rather take cops off unnecessary VIP-protection duties.“Police will not have to stand all day long on the VIP convoy routes. They will have a maximum of 12-hour workday and a mandatory day off every week,” he said. ਸ਼੍ਰੋਮਣੀ ਅਕਾਲੀ ਦਲ ਦੇ ਵਿਧਾਇਕਾਂ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਪੰਚਾਇਤਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਐਸਵਾਈਐਲ ਦੇ ਮੁੱਦੇ ’ਤੇ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰਪਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਮੰਗ ਪੱਤਰ ਦੇਣ ਸਬੰਧੀ ਸਾਬਕਾ ਮੁੱਖ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਸੀਨੀਅਰ ਕਾਂਗਰਸ ਆਗੂ ਬੀਬੀ ਰਾਜਿੰਦਰ ਕੌਰ ਭੱਠਲ ਨੇ ਅੱਜ ਇੱਥੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਅਕਾਲੀ ਦਲ ਐਸਵਾਈਐਲ ਦੇ ਮੁੱਦੇ ’ਤੇ ਡਰਾਮਾ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਕੇਂਦਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਭਾਜਪਾ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਹਰਿਆਣਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੀ ਭਾਜਪਾ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਹੈ, ਫਿਰ ਵੀ ਕੋਈ ਹੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ, ਜਿਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਦਲ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਦੀ ਨੀਅਤ ਦਾ ਪਤਾ ਲੱਗ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਬੀਬੀ ਭੱਠਲ ਅੱਜ ਲੁਧਿਆਣਾ ਕਚੋਰ ਮਾਰਕੀਟ ਦੇ ਕਮਿਊਨਿਟੀ ਸੈਂਟਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੈਲੀ ਲਈ ਆਏ ਸਨ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਿੱਲੀ ਦੇ ਮੁੱਖ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਅਤੇ ‘ਆਪ’ ਸੁਪਰੀਮੋ ਅਰਵਿੰਦ ਕੇਜਰੀਵਾਲ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਵਿਖੇ ਮੁਆਫ਼ੀ ਮੰਗਣ ਦੇ ਮੁੱਦੇ ’ਤੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਕੇਜਰੀਵਾਲ ਜਾਣਬੁੱਝ ਕੇ ਗਲਤੀਆਂ ਕਰਕੇ ਫਿਰ ਮੁਆਫੀ ਮੰਗਣ ਦਾ ਡਰਾਮਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਰੈਲੀ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਬੀਬੀ ਭੱਠਲ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਲੰਘੇ ਇੱਕ ਦਹਾਕੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੇਂਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਅਰਬਾਂ ਰੁਪਏ ਦੀ ਆਰਥਿਕ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਮਿਲਣ ਦੇ ਬਾਵਜੂਦ ਰਾਜ ਦੇ ਪੇਂਡੂ ਖੇਤਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਘੱਟ ਵਿਕਾਸ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੋਸ਼ ਲਾਇਆ ਕਿ ਬਾਦਲ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਨੇ ਪੇਂਡੂ ਖੇਤਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਿਕਾਸ ਕਾਰਜਾਂ ਦਾ ਪੈਸਾ ਹੋਰ ਉਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਲਈ ਵਰਤ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ। ਦੂਜੇ ਪਾਸੇ ਪਿੰਡਾਂ ਦੇ ਲੋਕ ਸੀਵਰੇਜ, ਸੜਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੁਰੰਮਤ, ਸਵੱਛ ਪਾਣੀ, ਸਾਫ਼-ਸਫਾਈ ਆਦਿ ਮੁੱਢਲੀਆਂ ਸਹੂਲਤਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਵੀ ਵਾਂਝੇ ਹਨ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸੂਬੇ ਦੇ ਨੌਜਵਾਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੱਧਦੀ ਬੇਰੁਜ਼ਗਾਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਟਾਈਮ ਬੰਬ ਦੱਸਿਆ, ਜੋ ਕਿਸੇ ਵੀ ਸਮੇਂ ਫਟ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਬਾਦਲ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਦਾ ਪੂਰਾ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਸਿਰਫ ਝੂਠੇ ਪ੍ਰਚਾਰ ਉੱਤੇ ਹੀ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂਕਿ ਉਹ ਸੂਬੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਵਾਂ ਨਿਵੇਸ਼ ਲਿਆਉਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੂਰੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਅਸਫਲ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ। ਉਦਯੋਗ ਖੇਤਰ ਕਾਫ਼ੀ ਹੱਦ ਤੱਕ ਬੰਦ ਹੋਣ ਦੀ ਕਗਾਰ ਉੱਤੇ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਖੇਤੀਬਾੜੀ ਖੇਤਰ ਵੀ ਲਗਾਤਾਰ ਗਿਰਾਵਟ ਵੱਲ ਵਧ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
