State Congress chief Captain Amarinder Singh Monday stormed into Sangat police station in Bathinda to protest against alleged registration of a false case against his party worker Baldev Singh.
Apparently, Singh broke down while narrating his tale during the ‘Halke Vich Captain’ programme Monday. Soon after this, Amarinder left the programme mid-way and went to the police station.
Once there, he issued a stern warning to the police. “Respect the uniform you are wearing and ensure that you resort to no injustice at the behest of the Akalis, whose days are numbered”, he told the police officials at station.I have nothing personal against you, but if I find that you having harassed or victimised any of my party workers, it will be more than personal for me, ” he said, adding, “All those police officials found guilty of having framed Congress workers must be ready to behind bars along with their Akali mentors”.
The PCC president said that Singh was booked in a false case after a scuffle between two groups in November 2015, just because he was a Congress supporter.
SSP Bathinda Swapan Sharma while shedding light on the case registered against Singh said, “There was a scuffle between two groups and we have conveyed that to the PPCC president that it will be sorted. Police will investigate to find more details .”

Amid ‘unni-ikki’ fears, Manpreet swears by Capt

“Unni-ikki” (19-21) is a popular Punjabi term for a tragedy. Rather, a tragedy which can be averted, albeit narrowly. At the Congress’ well-attended public meeting here on Friday, this cliché is heard repeatedly. Most of the speakers warn the gathering that an electoral “unni-ikki” can happen this time, courtesy AAP.
As we reach the venue, flex boards greet us with the slogan, ‘Chahunda hai Punjab, Captain di Sarkar’. Apart from Capt Amarinder Singh, the only prominent face on these boards is that of Manpreet Badal. Although he left the SAD several years ago, he is ironically shown wearing the trademark Akali-blue turban.
Despite humid weather, the queues in front of the stalls offering mutter paneer and chana with chapatti are getting longer. So is the crowd inside the palace’s hall.
Wearing a pink turban, Manpreet is sitting on the stage. With his thumbs pressed against the eyes, he will patiently listen to the speakers for the next two-three hours. This is the 46th public meeting he is attending while canvassing for the Congress. Local party leader Jagdarshan Kaur articulates the AAP threat.
“We should have no gila–shikva (grievances) this time. Kitey unni-ikki na ho jave AAP vali (Let’s ensure there is no tragedy due to AAP),” she says.
It’s already 1:30 pm. Visitors have started moving out of the hall. By now, the disposable plastic plates at the food stalls have run out of stock. As Manpreet’s name is announced, people rush back into the hall, with their meals wrapped in newspapers.
Manpreet starts on a lyrical note with Baba Bulle Shah and ‘Jugni’. He then begins a round of Badal-bashing by narrating how Aurangzeb loved to call himself Alamgir, Khurram as Shah Jahan, Saleem as Jehangir.
“All of them imagined themselves as the lords of the world. But none of them is revered today. Please remind Sukhbir of that,” he says.
Every speaker at the event calls Captain the next CM. So does Manpreet. But unlike others, AAP doesn’t find a mention in his address.
He appears convinced that Amarinder is the only leader who can save the state. He recites, “Jin rahon mein gardane kati, jin rahon mein asmate luti, vo dhoondti hain kisi Mir-e-Karvan ko (Paths that have witnessed bloodshed and rape are looking for the saviour of caravans).”
“Amarinder is Punjab’s Mir-e-Karvan,” he declares.
The speeches over, the audience leaves the hall. Standing under a flex board, Galoti village resident Sukhdev Singh says, “The Congress has a formidable contender from the Dharamkot seat, Sukhjit Singh Kaka Lohgarh. Par AAP da vi zor hai. Koi unni-ikki na ho jave (But AAP also enjoys influence. Hope there would be no tragedy).

Bathinda, August 8
Punjab Congress chief Capt Amarinder Singh today stormed a local police station after a farmer accused Akali leaders of grabbing his land. The police reportedly gave an assurance to the farmer, Baldev Singh, to resolve the matter in 10 days.
Amarinder was holding his “Halke Vich Captain” programme at Jassi Bagwali when the farmer came up with his complaint and expressed his helplessness over the matter.
The former CM, accompanied by scores of supporters, took Baldev Singh to the police station and raised the matter of his alleged harassment with DSP Gurjit Singh Romana. Baldev Singh alleged that his land was forcibly taken over and he was booked in a false case for his being a Congress supporter.
Amarinder warned the police officers against harassing the common man. “You will have to account for every offence of omission and commission committed against Congress workers. Respect the uniform you are wearing and ensure that you resort to no injustice at the behest of the Akalis,” he told them.
Except for a brief mention about failed cotton crop by Gehru village farmers and unavailability of clean water at certain places, the entire session was dominated with complaints by workers and leaders about the alleged police atrocities.
Harcharan Singh, a four-time former sarpanch of Maur village, said he was booked in a false case at the behest of a SAD leader. He was later acquitted by the court, but he faced harassment.
Karamjit Singh of Phul said he was wrongly booked in a theft case while the matter pertained to heated arguments over development issue. He said he had not been summoned by the police as yet, but the matter had been kept pending to harass him since he was a Congressman.

AAP volunteers oppose Harjot’s candidature from Sahnewal

LUDHIANA: A day after Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) workers opposed the candidature of Brigadier (retired) Raj Kumar from Balachaur, the party volunteers on Monday opposed Harjot Singh Bains, the candidate from Sahnewal constituency. Bains is AAP’s Punjab Youth Wing president.
A group of volunteers from Sahnewal raised slogans ‘Harjot Bains Go Back' outside the AAP's Sahnewal office.
The protesting volunteers claimed that local party workers were ignored while selecting the candidate from Sahnewal. “Before making announcement of the candidate from Sahnewal constituency, voting was conducted. Majority of volunteers voted for AAP’s youth wing in-charge from Fategarh Sahib Lok Sabha constituency Jagvir Singh Jaggi and the in-charge of the Sahnewal constituency Ajay Panesar. Either Jaggi or Panesar should have been declared as candidate,” said the volunteers. "We are unhappy as an outsider has been declared candidate from Sahnewal," they said. The volunteers said they would meet the senior leaders in this regard. The volunteers said they hoped that AAP convener Sucha Singh Chhotepur would talk to the high command in this regard.
Bains said that whenever a party announced the name of a candidate, some others express disappointment as they also hope for nomination. “These volunteers are part of the AAP and we need them,” he said .

On the run, suspended YAD leader shares his side of story on Facebook

AMRITSAR: Sharing his side of the story after cancelling a press conference on Sunday fearing arrest, suspended Youth Akali Dal (YAD) leader Navdeep Singh Goldy posted a video on Facebook on Monday.
Goldy was suspended after a brawl with Amritsar senior deputy mayor Avtar Singh Truckanwala during a meeting called by the deputy commissioner on Thursday. After a case was registered against him, Goldy had gone underground.
In the video uploaded on Facebook, Goldy rubbished the allegations levelled against him by Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leaders present at the meeting. He said the leaders got an FIR registered against him and got him suspended from the party by “misguiding” the police and the party high commandAccusing the SAD leaders of hatching the conspiracy to deny him party ticket in the assembly elections, Goldy said Truckanwala was the one to start using vulgar language, and also tried to manhandle him in presence of deputy commissioner Varun Roojam and municipal commissioner Sonali Giri. “When both officers left the meeting, Truckanwala and I had a scuffle, during which his turban fell, although I didn’t touch it. I left the venue in haste, and my mobile phone was left behind. As all relevant contact numbers were in the phone, I could not present my side of the story to the police, media and party high command,” he said.

Gagneja’s hand in RSS growth got him in trouble?

Anirudh Gupta
Ferozepur, August 8

From donning olive green to joining the saffron brigade, Brig Jagdish Kumar Gagneja (retd) has come a long way to become one of the most prominent faces of the RSS in the state.
After completing his education in Bathinda, Gagneja got commissioned in the Army in 1971. He joined the artillery unit and served on various important positions. After his retirement in 2006, Gagneja remained the principal of a college and worked with some NGOs before switching to his first love and joining the RSS in Jalandhar.
Gagneja became a formidable force, not only in his organisation but also in the state BJP as he was entrusted with the task of coordinating between the RSS, BJP and the state government.
He also became the driving force behind the proliferation of the “shakhas” in rural areas. He is also seen as the main architect of the RSS expansion in Punjab. As per RSS sources, under Gagneja’s stewardship, the number of walk-ins at the “shakhas” has seen a spurt as even non-Hindus, including Sikhs reportedly started frequenting these centres.
The sources say Gagneja’s activities were making some radical Sikh organisations anxious due to which he became a soft target. They say even the SAD is not happy with the trend of Sikhs joining the “shakhas”.
Gagneja is also a close confidant of RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat as the latter made several visits to the state after he took over as the state RSS vice-president.
“Gagneja is simple, straight forward and selfless leader, who is accessible to all,” said Kamal Sharma, former state BJP chief. He said he had remained a non-controversial person and was respected by all leaders. “He always keeps a low profile and even refused to accept security offered by the police,” said an RSS functionary.
Going strong with 700 ‘shakhas’
The RSS has about 700 "shakhas" (branches) in the state. The number was about 600 in 2014. The organisation increased its presence in the rural areas in last few years. It has seven units or "vibhags" in Punjab, each unit comprises several districts. These are: Patiala, Amritsar, Bathinda, Ludhiana, Ferozepur, Jalandhar, and Pathankot.
Claims no involvement in conversions, politics
The organisation denies its involvement in conversions or political actions. Each "shakha" conducts an hourly physical exercise programme every morning. The RSS claims to have trained staff to come to the aid of needy victims in road accidents and natural calamities. It has about 30 frontal organisations that work in the health and education sectors and for rural development. The group insists on using "swadeshi" products and upholds the Indian culture.

LAW AND ORDER SITUATION

Sack SAD-BJP government in state: Verka to Guv

AMRITSAR: The National SC Commission vice-chairman, Raj Kumar Verka, today stated that the Punjab Governor should ask the President of India to dismiss the SAD-BJP government over the deteriorating law and order issue in the state.Tribune News Service

Amritsar, August 8
The National SC Commission vice-chairman, Raj Kumar Verka, today stated that the Punjab Governor should ask the President of India to dismiss the SAD-BJP government over the deteriorating law and order issue in the state.
He said the BJP should withdraw its support to the SAD government rather than giving statements regarding failing law and order in the state. While condemning the brutal attack on the RSS Punjab vice-president, Jagdish Gagneja, he said leaders of the BJP, who had met Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to express their anguish, had come out with yet another statement to soothe pulsating nerves of the people and the party.
“Will BJP leaders fix a deadline? Ideally, the party should withdraw its support or demand resignation of the Deputy Chief Minister, who also holds the charge of Home Minister over dismal law and order in state,” he added.
He said, “Gruesome murder of Chand Kaur, wife of the former head of Namdhari sect in Ludhiana, murderous attack on Dhadrianwala, killing of a wood trader in Amritsar, all these cases indicate towards failing law and order in  the state. All these cases still remain unsolved.”
“Cases of atrocities on the Dalit community have increased manifolds in Punjab. Due to false cross case registered against members of the community at behest of the ruling party, justice eludes Dalits,” he added.
Verka said on one hand Punjab was battling with the problem of drug abuse, on the other the government had given a free hand to the sale of liquor in the state. He alleged that the number of illegal liquor vends in a village was more than a licensed vend. He urged the Governor to write to the President of India for dismissal of the Punjab government without any delay.
Reacting to the statement of Prime Minister, who had expressed concern over attacks on Dalit community members by fake ‘Gau Rakshaks’, he said would it change the reality at the ground?

Post attack on RSS leader, organisations up ante against SAD-BJP government

Tribune News Service
Jalandhar, August 8

After the Saturday night attack on the RSS leader Brig Jagdish Gagneja (retd), various Hindu outfits have upped their ante against the SAD-BJP government.
National president of the Shiv Sena (Punjab) Sanjeev Ghanoli and nation president of Shiv Sena (Hindustan) Pawan Gupta released a joint statement here condemning the attack and blaming the state government and the Punjab Police for the problem. “The attack took place in the heart of the city, but the police are still clueless after two days,” they said.
They blamed the Punjab Police for having failed to crack the heinous murder of teenage boy Vidhu Jain in Malerkotla in September 2013 and also for no breakthrough in the case of missing Swami Krishanand of Gau Sewa Mission in Hoshiarpur since June this year.
“In nine years, the Punjab government has done nothing which makes Hindus happy in the state. A grant sought for the upkeep of temples did not come and the entire funds have gone for constructing memorials. A Rs 781-crore package went for riot-affected people in Delhi, with nothing coming for the terrorism affected families in Punjab,” they alleged adding that the situation prevailed when the BJP ruled at the Centre and was in ruling alliance in the state.
Even the RSS leaders have been daily holding meetings and gave a memorandum on the issue to the administrations in all districts. Owing to the growing unrest, the paramilitary forces too have been deployed in the city today.
Chugh for high-level probe
PHAGWARA: Strongly condemning the attack on the RSS leader, Brig Jagdish Gagneja (retd), BJP national secretary Tarun Chugh on Monday demanded a high-level probe into the attack.
Chugh asked Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal to order a high-level probe into the matter so that the culprits were identified, arrested and punished according to the law.
The BJP leader also asked DGP Suresh Arora to fix a deadline for the SIT constituted to crack this case. He said the DGP needed to fix a time-frame for the identification and arrest of all the culprits and masterminds behind the murderous attack.
He said this was the second attack on the RSS in the state. Earlier, some masked assailants had attacked an RSS “shakha” at Kidwai Nagar in Ludhiana.
Chugh sought to relate the incident to the RSS spreading its wings in the rural areas for the expansion of the organisation. He said the attack was possibly planned and executed by the forces that were not feeling comfortable with the response RSS was getting in the rural areas of Punjab.
Strongly condemning the attack on Gagneja, the Shiv Sena state vice-president Inderjit Karwal said there was a deep conspiracy of the Badal government near the coming Assembly elections to play a communal card.
Addressing a meeting, the Sena leader alleged that the BJP, too, was playing into the hands of the Akalis and, moreover, the BJP was preferring alliance dharma than “Rashtra Dharma”. He urged the government to immediately arrest the culprits responsible for the attack on the RSS leader and prove its sincerity to maintain law and order in the state.
Activists of the RSS, led by Shiv Handa, on Monday held a protest against the murderous attack on RSS leader Jagdish Gagneja on Saturday night in Jalandhar. The protesters later met Additional Deputy Commissioner Iqbal Singh Sandhu in his office and submitted a memorandum to him, demanding immediate arrest of the culprits this afternoon.
Commenting on the attack on Gagneja, former Congress leader and minister Joginder Singh Maan alleged that law and order situation in the state had been completely deteriorated in the state, but the Akalis were still looting the state.

Assailants had been tracking Brigadier Gagneja

Jalandhar, August 8
It was for an hour and 16 minutes that the two bike-borne assailants were tracking the RSS state vice-president Brig Jagdish Gagneja (retd) on Saturday evening.
As the 10 investigating teams gathered CCTV footages, which are the prime source of investigation in the case, the earliest footage that the police reportedly got is of 6:55 pm from the Jalandhar Cantonment area, where Brig Gagneja resides. His residence falls in the Deep Nagar locality here. Since it was day, the pictures released by the Punjab Police to the media have sufficient light in the background.
The assault took place at 8:11 pm when it was dark. The assailants kept roaming about, tracking the elderly couple in their Maruti Swift car from home for long through the alleys and even highways at some point of time. They somehow got a good location to get close to the victim for attack at a dark, dingy corner.
As per the reports, the police has managed to get over a dozen grabs from the CCTV cameras installed in shops, houses and even highways, some of which they claim were installed through public funding under the project “Aankhein” (meaning eyes, actually digital eye).
The cops are now trying to catch hold of some such footages wherein the youth could be unmasked, trailing them down further and tracking their route on the basis of the cameras installed. “Of all the pictures we have scanned, zoomed and improved through various digital techniques, it appears that the man in front could be bearded and has hair on his head. However, not even such description of the man riding pillion can even be made out as he has covered both his head and face completely. The one in front has a small black headgear, while the one at the back has it in indigo blue,” a cop elaborated.
A cash reward and a lucrative job announced for the informer has perhaps come for the reason that most grabs are unclear and do not even give the details of the alphabetic digits of the registration plate of the bike used.
However, the moot point remains that the suspects kept roaming about the city with masks and no cop stopped them anywhere for over an hour.
IG Nilabh Kishor said he was not authorised to speak to the media on any issue. Police Commissioner Arpit Shukla said, “Cameras have been a great help to zero in on the criminals. Our teams are on job. We are getting more leads on a daily basis.”

Law and order situation has stooped to a new low in state’

Tribune News Service
Jalandhar, August 8
Expressing concern over the steep increase in the crime rate in Punjab, Jalandhar MP Choudhary Santokh Singh today said that the law and order situation has now stooped to a new low in the state and people have lost faith in the state government as far as sense of security was concerned.
Citing recent cases of murders—Mata Chand Kaur of Namdhari Sect in Ludhiana, Industrialist Anil Kumar Billa and RSS leader Jagdish Gagneja—Chaudhary said that it seems the law and order situation was heading towards worse than the hay days of terrorism. It has become more serious as the Punjab Police has failed to solve not even one of these cases.
He said that he would strongly rake up this issue in Parliament. While training his guns for saffron party, Chaudhary said: “BJP is waiting for what? If they would have reacted strongly against the deteriorated law and order on time, firing incident on Gagneja could have been avoided.”
Posing a query towards Akalis, Chaudhary said “Badal Saab, where are the culprits behind the repeated incidents of sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib? What is the outcome of CBI probe into the Bargadi’s sacrilege incident and the police firing in which two innocent youth lost their lives?”
Meanwhile, Jagmeet Singh Brar, former Congress leader, also condemned the attack on senior RSS leader Brig. Jagdish Gagneja. He said, “This act is the part of a greater plan of communal forces to destabilise Punjab before the elections. It is in the same pattern as attacks on preachers like Sant Dhandrianwale and repeated desecration incidents of Sri Guru Granth Saheb.”

Left parties up in arms

Tribune News Service
Jalandhar, August 8

Four left parties, CPI (M), CPI, CPM (Punjab) and CPI (ML) Liberation, organised a protest in front of the District Administrative Complex against the growing farming and farm labourer crisis in the state.
The two-day protest started today. It would raise issues, including rising inflation, communalism and unemployment.
While addressing the gathering, the leaders said the parties had handed over 15-point memorandum to the state government two years. It also included prevalent issues in the state, yet those points have not been considered so far.
They said both state and Centre have failed to minimise the growing farming crisis in the country. Thousands of farmers across the country have committed suicide due to alleged faulty policies of the state and Centre.
While expressing concern over the education system, they said the privatisation of education has snatched the Right to Education from the weaker sections of the society. The education has been made a commodity that was being sold now.
They also demanded minimum wages for the industrial labour Rs 18,000 per month.
